Fright Night (2011)

Director:
Craig Gillespie
Writers:
Marti Noxon (screenplay), Tom Holland (story)

I can’t say I was a fan of the original and I can say I am not that fused with the remake. David Tennant is playing more Russell Brand than Roddy McDowall; I don’t think Roddy would have sworn so much if he was in it today! It didn’t keep me awake let alone scare me! Is it me or does Toni Collette look more and more malnourished with each role? I quiet like Colin Farrell normally when he has more to do than bite people.

Quote: ‘Evil’ Ed Thompson: That’s fiction, okay. This is real. He’s a real monster and he’s not brooding, or lovesick, or noble. He’s the fucking shark from Jaws. He kills, he feeds, and he doesn’t stop until everybody around him is dead. And I seriously am so angry you think I read Twilight.

“People see me as a strong black figure, and I’m proud of that, but I’m a mix of several races: Hispanic, Chinese, Filipino. My dad was black, and my mom was Cheyenne Indian. So you look at things beyond just race, or even religion: I was raised Catholic, baptized a Methodist, and almost married a Muslim.”

In Time (2011)

Director:
Andrew Niccol
Writer:
Andrew Niccol

Quiet an ingenious idea for a science fiction film where time is the currency. I was thinking of the film called Gattaca then I read that he also wrote and directed that film as well. It looks somewhat the same( in the affluent parts of the city as it was all cold and sterile). It is quite a scary idea really; I wouldn’t want to live like that. Also odd that everyone is around the same age. Unlike the decadent lives in Logan’s Run and the religious beliefs of the Carrousel; this dystopic ageist society story is very critical of capitalism. The poverty classes work day by day and work to ‘actually’ keep alive. It is quite depressing really and for a film about using time wisely some of the pacing and narrative went on the slow side!

Quote: Sylvia Weis: How does anyone live like this?
Will Salas: You don’t generally sleep in.

Down and Out in Paris and London, by George Orwell
Chapter XXV

“It is a curious but well-known fact that bugs are much commoner in south than north London. For some reason they have not yet crossed the river in any great numbers.”

I have just finished reading this book. I would highly recommend it.

Anton Corbijn 20 May 1955.
“There’s a lot about records that you cannot feel from a CD. I know that’s an era that’s gone, but for a lot of people my age, it was a very important thing. How a record slips out. The crackle when it plays. It’s lovely, very alive. CDs are not alive. I know everything’s about comfort these days - that’s why there’s digital instead of analog. Analog is more beautiful than digital, really, but we go for comfort”

The Rum Diary (2011)

Director:
Bruce Robinson
Writers:
Bruce Robinson (screenplay), Hunter S. Thompson (novel)

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would as I was still reeling from Johnny Depp performance in The Tourist. Robinson and Hunter have a similar take on characters; I guess he is the perfect choice to adapt A Hunter S. Thompson book. Maybe I shouldn’t comment on something like that as I haven’t read the original source material. The actors are all sound and the humour (that is really very Hunter and Robinson) is dry and dark at times.

Quote: Sala: You’re high, you fool! Drink some rum.

Pete Townshend 19 May 1945

Keith Moon is not interested in Jazz and won’t ever be a Jazz drummer because he’s more interested in looking good and being screamed at. [Circa 1966.]
